I am interested in knowing what movies you have watched and what you enjoyed or not. So please send me an email at scinema@earthlink.net if you'd like to share. Here's what I watched last week:

Enjoyed:

LA HISTORIA OFICIAL, aka THE OFFICIAL STORY (1985) - The Best Foreign Film Oscar winner for 58th Annual Academy Awards.

THE TULSA LYNCHING OF 1921: A HIDDEN STORY (2000)

Mildly enjoyed:

TRACK 29 (1988) - Why someone felt that Dennis Potter's 1975 television play SCHMOEDIPUS should be turned into a movie with the locale changed from England to the United States may remain an unanswered question, but that original title better suggests why the film begins with Gary Oldman hitchhiking to John Lennon's "Mother". The new title seems to have come from "Chattanooga Choo Choo", made famous by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra, and may have inspired the Christopher Lloyd character being a model train fanatic.

LE VIEUX FUSIL, aka THE OLD GUN (1975) - The 1976 Cesar Award winner for Best Film, Best Actor (Philippe Noiret) and Best Music (Francois de Roubaix) is a pretty straight-forward revenge flick with a French doctor trapping the Nazis who murdered his wife (Romy Schneider) and daughter (Catherine Delaporte) inside his chateau. He goes after them with the old shotgun he inherited from this father. The film doesn't have the feel of an action film with many flashbacks.

EL CAMINO (2019) - There is a startling mention of Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, toward the end of this movie.

LE RETOUR DE MARTIN GUERRE aka THE RETURN OF MARTIN GUERRE (1982)

LES RIPOUX, aka MY NEW PARTNER (1984) - Writer-director Claude Zidi delivers a funny comedy depending on how tolerant you feel toward police corruption, putting cocaine into a nasal spray and prostitutes wearing fur coats. It won the César Award for Best Film and Best Director in 1985.

JOHN WICK CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM (2019) - I liked the simplicity of the first film. I'm not enjoying the cartoony fantasy complications the filmmakers are bringing into the story. At least THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS had an ending.

Did not enjoy:

SATAN'S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS (1973)

IDAHO KID (1936) - Our hero, played by Rex Bell, comes up on a stagecoach robbery and opinions, "Amateur". He allows The Kid, played by Dave Sharpe, to rob the stagecoach, but then sabotages the robber's saddle. Capturing him, our hero takes him to town, has him return the stolen money, and then takes him to eat. On their way to eat, our hero gets an offer to sign up with John Endicott, played by Lafe McKee. An offer to join Clint Hollister, played by Earl Dwire, is also made. Eventually it comes out that our hero is Todd Hollister, the son of Clint Hollister. After his mother died in childbirth, Todd had to be protected from his father, who wanted to kill him, so Ma Endicott, played by Dorothy Wood, took the child to raise him. When it became apparent that this action poisoned the relationship between Hollister and Endicott, Todd decided to leave, but his absence did not cool things down. He has returned and takes a job with his father using the name "Idaho" in the hope that he can prove his worthiness to his father. However, Hollister has decided to escalate the feud and plans to string wire to the prevent Endicott from taking his cattle to water. After preventing Hollister from "framing" a murder twice, Idaho and The Kid quit Hollister and sign up with Endicott. After Idaho foils Hollister's plan with the fence, Hollister counters by turning the creek. Idaho convinces Endicott to not go to war, and then sets out to find more water. Instead, he prevents Hollister's men from dynamiting another possible stream, and then uses the dynamite to returning the creek to what it was. Hollister's henchman, Bibb Slagel, played by Charles King, takes another man to wait in town to shoot-it-out with Idaho - a challenge our hero accepts. Finishing off his father's killers, Idaho is challenged to fight by his father unless he leaves town by sundown. Ruth Endicott, played by Marion Shilling, turns to her father to help, so Endicott challenges Hollister to leave town a half hour before sundown. Rather than shoot-it-out with his father, Idaho decides to leave town until The Kid catches up with him on the road. Jumping between Hollister and Endicott, Idaho takes a bullet from his father, causing The Kid to break his promise and reveal Idaho's true identity. In the end, Hollister accepts our hero as his son and ends the feud. Meanwhile, the prospector, Tumblebug Jones, played by Phil Dunham, comes in and tells everyone that he's found gold and that they are all rich. Produced by the short-lived Colony Pictures, IDAHO KID is an incredibly low-budget effort. Rex Bell started his career in Silent Westerns, but is better known for marrying Clara Bow and becoming Lieutenant Governor of Nevada from 1954 until his death in 1962.

PELLE THE CONQUEROR (1987) - Based on the first part of the 1910 novel by Martin Anderson Nexø, this film co-written and directed by Billie August proves that Scandanavian filmmakers excell at portraying misery. I can't help but feel that this film won the Palme d'Or and the Best Foreign Language Oscar because viewers feel ennobled to have suffered through the 150 minute running time. There is no denying the skill and talent that went into making this film, but I certainly didn't enjoy it.

SOMMERSBY (1993) - This is not quite a remake of THE RETURN OF MARTIN GUERRE. But as they changed so much, why not just just create a wholly original story instead of twisting and embellishing the tale to reach the same ending?

SANTA'S SLAY (2005)

**********************************************************************

David Deal enjoyed:

SO DARLING SO DEADLY (66)

MARLOWE (69) - James Garner carries this agreeable, TV-level mystery about Tinseltown naughtiness.  The cast of familiar supporters is worth the price of admission.

GUILTY BYSTANDER (50) - Drunk ex-cop gets word his kid is missing and tries to dry out while tracking down the culprits.  The plot meanders but New York locations and a solid performance by Scott make this worth checking out.

BLUE NOTE RECORDS: BEYOND THE NOTES (18) - Interesting documentary on the jazz label.

VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (67) - From 2006: "The deservedly legendary and fabulously tacky booze 'n' drugs showbiz pic.  Total widescreen, stage-bound 60s kitsch.  Some terrific sets, cool cars, and tons of delirious, soapy melodrama!  Must be seen to be believed.  Sharon Tate was, perhaps, the world's most beautiful woman."

TALES OF TERROR (62)

Mildly enjoyed:

NO HANDS ON THE CLOCK (41) - Newlywed private eye Chester Morris drags his bride with him on his latest missing persons case. Morris holds up this over-plotted programmer.  Fun.

THE DEADLY MANTIS (57) - Generally looked down upon by fans of 50s sci-fi, I find DM to be enjoyable for the very reasons it is spurned: because it is predictable and generic in the extreme.  It may be dull but it has a good cast, and its lethargy as art is an asset in my book.

THE PASSION OF SLOW FIRE (62) - Exchange student Alexandra Stewart living with professor Jean Desaily and his wife is found dead in their house.  Thru flashbacks we discover the culprit.  Edouard Molinaro (La Cage aux Folles and Eurospy fave To Commit a Murder) crafted a small and subtle mystery of interest only to the genre devotee or fans of Stewart.

**********************************************************************

Charles Gilbert watched:

AN AMERICAN AFFAIR (2008) A catholic male teen circa 1960 befriends a single young woman living across the street in D. C. soon discovering she is one of JFK's paramours just before he's assassinated.

40 GUNS TO APACHE PASS (1967) Turncoat Bodine (Kenneth Tobey) deserts a platoon of cavalry soldiers led by Captain Audie Murphy, confiscating the rifles necessary at the fort to defend against the Indians.

THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS (2009) Dean Jones plays Abraham of the Old Testament in an independent production from brothers Andrew and Jon Erwin. The story is reputed to be a brief parable from the New Testament (Luke16:19) where a selfish rich man pays for his cruelty to a poor beggar, finding himself in the lake of fire upon death, when the beggar enjoys his reward in "Abraham's bosom".

I am interested in knowing what movies you have watched and what you enjoyed or not. So please send me an email at scinema@earthlink.net if you'd like to share. Here's what I watched last week:

Enjoyed:

KAFKA (1991)

Mankiller (2017) - Valerie Red-Horse Mohl directed this marvelous documentary about the first woman Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation; Wilma Pearl Mankiller. Gale Anne Hurd was the executive producer.

VENOM (2018) - But couldn't they have given Michelle Williams a better wig?

Mildly enjoyed:

ALLIGATOR (1980)

John Ford, l'homme qui inventa l'Amerique, aka John Ford: The Man Who Invented America (2019)

BLITHE SPIRIT (1945) - For it's time, this was rather risque material with characters gloating about extra-marital affairs. Noel Coward reportedly didn't approve of the ending director David Lean added to his play and I don't disagree with him.

LONGTIME COMPANION (1990)

IRONWEED (1987)

LOVE LETTERS (1945) - Ayn Rand and Hal B. Wallis are two names one doesn't usually associate with gothic romance mysteries, but here is one of the many films featuring Jennifer Jones and Joseph Cotten.

Iliza Shlesinger "Iliza Unveiled" (2019)

THE LATE SHOW (1977)

Dolly Parton: 50 Years At the Opry (2019)

THE CHAPERONE (2018) - Haley Lu Richardson plays Louise Brooks in this TV movie written by Julian Fellowes from the novel by Laura Moriarty. Elizabeth McGovern plays the chaperone for Louise Brooks on her first trip to New York to study at the Denishawn dance school. Miranda Otto plays Ruth St. Denis.

IT Chapter One (2017) - I would like to see more of Sophia Lillis.

Did not enjoy:

ENAMORADA (1946) - Director Emilio Fernandez directed Pedro Armendariz and Maria Felix in this tale of a Mexican Revolutionary General who discovers the meaning of love after he takes a town and sees the upper class daughter of a rich land owner. Gabriel Figueroa provided the excellent photography.

PERSECUTION, aka THE GRAVEYARD (1974) - As the British based Horror Film companies Hammer and Amicus began to fail, Kevin Francis, the son of Freddie Francis - who had directed films for both Hammer and Amicus, decided to attempt to carry on their tradition with a new company - Tyburn Films Productions Limited. For his first production, Kevin hired Lana Turner to join Bette Davis and Joan Fontaine in doing a British psycological flick. He also hired a slew of former Hammer workers - including director Don Chaffey and actors Ralph Bates, Suzan Farmer, Patrick Allen & Ronald Howard. Also, in the Hammer tradition, Kevin brought over a beauty from the European continent - Olga Georges-Picot. Unfortunately, none of the movies Tyburn made were any good. PERSECUTION was the first, followed by THE GHOUL and LEGEND OF THE WEREWOLF, the latter two directed by Kevin's father Francis.

REVENGE (1990) - To my taste, director Tony Scott made ugly-looking movies. As Kevin Costner plays a former U.S. Navy pilot, I like to think of this as the sequel to TOP GUN, and I didn't like that flick either. My only real interest in this movie is that Tomas Milian plays Anthony Quinn's chief henchman. Unfortunately, the role gives him about as much of a chance to show his talent as his role in TRAFFIC does.

BORIS AND NATASHA, aka BORIS AND NATASHA: THE MOVIE (1990)

**********************************************************************

David Deal enjoyed:

DAVID CROSBY: REMEMBER MY NAME (19) - Croz lays it out.  Liked it.

I'LL SEE YOU IN HELL (60) - From 2015: "I liked this heist gone wrong flick with John Drew Barrymore, Massimo Serrato and Eva Bartok.  Interesting locations and a madness theme make this a cut above."

DATE FOR A MURDER (66)

THE CREEPER (48) - In 2015 I wrote this had a classic Universal feel.  Upon a second viewing, I'm not so sure of that assessment.  This seemed to me this time to have the decadent, edgy feel of Island of Lost Souls.

FRAMING JOHN DELOREAN (19) - A mix of reenactment and authentic footage tells the rags to riches to rags story of the man who invented the GTO.

LE DOULOS (62) - Jean-Pierre Melville's puzzle of distrust among criminals is a worthy warm-up for the masterpieces to come.

THE GOLDEN HAWK (52) - During the war allies England and Spain are waging against France, privateer Sterling Hayden runs up against Rhonda Fleming (as Captain Rouge) in this colorful, action-packed swashbuckling adventure.

Mildly enjoyed:

THE LONE WOLF SPY HUNT (39) - Warren William takes on the mantle of the Lone Wolf in the first film of the series that sees the reformed criminal involved with spies.  Ida Lupino and Rita Hayworth play along.

**********************************************************************

Charles Gilbert watched:

ELECTRA ONE (1967) George Martin takes a turn at the superspy character in this espionage caper set in Hamburg, and replete with the typical gratuitious jazz-themed car chases. Atrocious dubbing switches from English to Italian occasionally. Danish actress Vivi Bach costars with Daniele Vargas and Rosalba Neri.

HOT SUMMER IN BAREFOOT COUNTY (1974) Tame hokum about the investigation by a city cop into moonshining in the 'sticks'. Female farm yokels, with a still out back passed on through generations, are continuing the enterprise for "survival". The investigator winds up falling for one of the lasses and thus conceals his findings. The only actor I recognize is Jeff McKay from Magnum P.I. and JAG.

HOSTILE WATERS (1997) Riveting true account of the Soviet ballistic missile 'boomer' submarine K219 which sank near Bermuda in 1986. Rutger Hauer delivers a memorable performance as CO of the stricken boat, with Martin Sheen his U.S counterpart aboard the fast attack U.S.S. Aurora with which his collided. Max Von Sydow plays a high ranking Russian naval officer. Highly recommended.

I am interested in knowing what movies you have watched and what you enjoyed or not. So please send me an email at scinema@earthlink.net if you'd like to share. Here's what I watched last week:

Enjoyed:

The Director's Chair "Frank Darabont" (2016)

MISSISSIPPI MASALA (1991)

THE NEXT MAN (1976) - Seeing this movie in 2019 makes it seem even more odd than it would have seemed when it was new. Starting off with shots of the World Trade Center in New York, the film goes on to speculate that Saudi Arabia proposes to invite Israel into OPEC in an effort to bring peace to the MIddle East. Other Arab countries, particularly Syria, are unhappy with the idea, but so is the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. Sean Connery is the Saudi who makes the proposal at the U.N. and Cornelia Sharpe is among the assassins sent to murder him. Reportedly, the Saudi government officially protested the premise of the movie.

E! True Hollywood Story "Mackenzie Phillips" (1998) - Having just finished reading HIGH ON ARRIVAL, Mackenzie's 2009 memoir, I wanted to rewatch this program. This program ends with her, and her father, supposedly living the sober life. Her father died in 2001 and in 2008, she was busted with cocaine and heroin at LAX. As part of her new rehabilitation, Mackenzie wrote her memoir which doesn't mention this program, but the timeline of the book would indicate that the sober life shown was a facade. There is no indication of the incest which was disclosed in the book, and there is also no mention of her relationships with her step-sisters and step-mothers - except Michelle Phillips who is interviewed. Her memoir pretty much destroyed her familial relationships, except with her birth mother. In an interview given around the time that Mackenzie appeared on Orange Is The New Black in 2018, she indicated that she now has re-established relationships with her step-sisters.

Mildly enjoyed:

Uncnsrd "Paula Patton" (2019)

Denis Leary "No Cure For Cancer" (1993)

Inside the Actors Studio "Laura Dern" (2019)

American Masters: N. Scott Momaday: Words From A Bear (2019)

DEAD OF NIGHT (1945) - There is no doubting this film's classic status, but it doesn't reward repeat viewings.

A HIGH WIND IN JAMAICA (1965)

LA GRIETA, aka THE RIFT, aka ENDLESS DESCENT (1990) - J.P. Simon mixes ALIENS and THE ABYSS and keeps it under 80 minutes. Featuring Edmund Purdom, Frank Brana and Tony Isbert.

Did not enjoy:

MOON, STAR AND SUN (1988) - Cherie Chung, Carol 'Do Do' Cheng and Maggie Cheung look gorgeous but can't salvage this heavy melodramatic tale of bar girls trapped in a joyless life.

PROBLEM CHILD (1990) - This is the film during which John Ritter met his future wife Amy Yasbeck, so something good came of it.

PROBLEM CHILD 2 (1991) - It is fun seeing Martha Quinn in a bit role.

A DEMON WITHIN (2017)

DEBUNKERS, INC. (2019)

BODY CHEMISTRY II: THE VOICE OF A STRANGER (1991) - This film has a novel first scene. While dealing with traumatic flashbacks, Dan Pearson, played by Gregory Harrison, loads his revolver with one bullet and five fortunes from Chinese cookies. He puts the gun in his mouth, but the hammer hits a fortune. He takes it out and reads, "Confucious say: He who has hope has everything." The scene dissolve to a car driving in the night and an hand tunes in a talk radio show hosted by Dr. Edwards, played by John Landis. Station owner Big Chuck, played by Morton Downey Jr. decides to fire Dr. Edwards and brings in Dr. Claire Archer, played by Lisa Pescia, who is interested in exploring how stimulating body chemistry can lead to violent behavior. A traffic cop, played by Jeremy Piven, tells Dan that he can't sleep in his car on the side of the road and then remembers that he was a former football star. Returning to his home town, Dan meets his old girlfriend, Brenda - played by Robin Riker, but is troubled and seeks advice from Dr. Archer on her radio show. Dan doesn't realize that Brenda screens calls for Dr. Archer, so she hears about a caller who likes to hurt women during sex. Meanwhile, Big Chuck meets with Larabee, played by Clint Howard, at a coffee shop so that Larabee can investigate Dr. Archer. Dr. Archer figures out that Dan is the caller and offers her services in person. As he is going over his traumatic childhood, Dan is insulted by the doctor and makes to hit her. "Go ahead," she says. "Make my day." Larabee gives Big Chuck a video of Dr. Archer having sex with a man she ended up shooting to death. Was this footage from the first BODY CHEMISTRY? In an attempt to get the tape from Chuck, Archer causes Chuck to die of a heart attack. She then decides to shoot Dan using his gun, but the hammer hits a fortune. Dan succeeds in getting the gun away from Archer just in time for cops to arrive and shoot him to death. The role of Dr. Claire Archer was taken over by Shari Shattuck for BODY CHEMISTRY III and by Shannon Tweed for BODY CHEMISTRY IV.

THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT (2018) - I do not share Lars von Trier's sense of humor. Why the Bob Dylan allusion? Is Lars trying to ruin my appreciation of "Fame" by David Bowie?

DANCE OF THE DWARFS (1983) - Deborah Raffin looks terrific and Peter Fonda is fun, but the film doesn't fly.

THE BABY DANCE (1997) - Laura Dern plays a poor mother who is having trouble taking care of the four kids she already has and is pregnant again. Stockard Channing is a rich wife who can't get pregnant. Dern sees Channing's ad looking to adopt, so she invites the Los Angeles Jews to visit her in Louisiana where she lives with her unemployed husband Richard Lineback. Channing's husband, Peter Riegert, is uncertain about getting a child born from this couple, and when there is a suggestion the baby might have been born with mental deficiencies, the adoption plans are dropped. Jodie Foster admired the play Jane Anderson wrote and executive produced this film for Showtime which marked Anderson's film directing debut. It was awarded the Peabody Award.

A GIRL TO KILL FOR (1990)

THE BANKER (1989)

CONCRETE WAR, aka THE LAST HOUR (1991) - It is hard to believe that director William Sachs cites Federico Fellini and Luis Bunuel as influences.

OUT OF THE RAIN (1991) - While there are virtues to this production, much of it is negated by the dreadful music by Cengiz Yaltkaya.

WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE... (1998) - Writer/Director Philip Frank Messina assembled an impressive cast for his movie about a group of actors going crazy for a chance to read for apart in a Martin Scorsese movie, but the movie just isn't funny.

CAUGHT (1996) - Here's another tale about the dangers of trying to help an homeless young man by bringing him into your home. Particularly if your real son is a homicidal creep.

**********************************************************************

David Deal enjoyed:

CAESAR THE CONQUEROR (63) - Sinister Cinema's copy is colorful and widescreen, but I'm not convinced it is the correct aspect ratio.  Neither is it enhanced.

MAGNETIC MONSTER (53) - Richard Carlson is a scientist who discovers a new element that feeds on energy and will stop at nothing to get it.  This nerdy science fiction is presented as a thriller.  This is an old fave that holds up with its casting and enthusiasm.

KISS KISS KILL KILL (65)

THE MAN ON THE SPYING TRAPEZE (66)

QUIET PLEASE, MURDER (42) - George Sanders is a rare book forger whose quest for product leads to murder.  Gail Patrick is in cahoots with Sanders and Richard Denning is the private eye who investigates.  Unusual plotting traps everyone in a library with Sanders impersonating a cop!  Well worth checking out.

DEAD RECKONING (47) - Ex-paratrooper Humphrey Bogart investigates the murder of his buddy.  Lizabeth Scott is the femme fatale.  A film noir filled with post-war angst.  Good stuff.

THE BRAIN (62) - From 2005: "This German/British hybrid of Curt Siodmak's oft-filmed sci-fi story - directed by Freddie Francis - is a dark and moody version indeed. Peter van Eyck is the scientist taken over by the brain of an industrialist kept alive after a plane crash."

BROTHERS IN ARMS (18) - Documentary about the making of Platoon. Quite the experience for those guys who have a bond that is still strong. Recommended.

FINAL PORTRAIT (18) - Geoffrey Rush is Alberto Giacometti painting what would be his last portrait. Nicely captures the chaos, frustration, and humor of the creative process. I liked it.

Mildly enjoyed:

FEAR (46) - A college student desperate for money kills a pawn broker and Warren William is the cop who finally solves the case.  Okay thriller with an improbable happy ending.

**********************************************************************

Charles Gilbert watched:

PANCHO VILLA (1972) Telly Savalas hams his role (and sings the denouement) as the revolutionary from south of the border aided by sailor Scotty (Clint Walker) leading a band of Mexicans headed for a confrontation with corny martinet of the U. S Army Col. Wilcox (Chuck Connors). (The incident Wilcox has with the fly while dining in unison with his platoon is a hoot).  Anne Francis with that devastating beauty mark plays Scotty's estranged wife but given little to do but bicker with him. Amusing.

NIGHT OF THE GRIZZLY (1966) Exceedingly long tale of a homesteader battling landgrabber Keenan Wynn, foe trapper Cass (Leo Gordon), and a marauding grizzly includes costars Martha Hyer and Ron Ely.
