I am interested in knowing what movies you have watched and what you enjoyed or not. So please send me an email at scinema@earthlink.net if you'd like to share. Here's what I watched last week:

Did not enjoy:

Dead Of Night (1977) - The first Horror anthology film I saw was DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS when I was about nine years old. I loved it then, as I did the Twilight Zone TV series, but as I got older, I tired of the format, particularly around the time of Night Gallery and TALES FROM THE CRYPT. (For some reason, I still love TORTURE GARDEN and the original 1945 DEAD OF NIGHT.) Dark Shadows producer Dan Curtis got into the game with 1975's Trilogy of Terror, which was pretty dull except for the third story "Amelia". Trilogy of Terror was based on short stories by Richard Matheson, so Curtis and Matheson re-teamed to do another, including one story by Jack Finney. This time, the entire TV program was pretty dull, though the third segment, "Bobby", tried very hard to replicate "Amelia". I was first exposed to Curtis by the feature film HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS and loved the soundtrack album for the Dark Shadows TV series, so I got some pleasure hearing Robert Cobert's "creepy" music again. But this program offered nothing new, which, unfortunately, was how I felt about Curtis' feature film around that time BURNT OFFERINGS.

TRUE CRIME (1995) - One of a number of films she made before she became a star in CLUELESS, Alicia Silverstone played the daughter of a cop who was killed in the line of duty. So, this senior in a Catholic high school was obsessed with becoming a cop, though her efforts seemed pointed at homicide not beat.  Finding that the murder of a local teenage girl was unsolved, Silverstone focused her attention on that case. Soon she suspected Kevin Dillon, until she found out that he was a police cadet. He suggested that the two of them team up to solve the murder, and, not surprisingly, she fell in love with him and they have sex in the back of a parked car. After some more murders and her chief suspect seeming to have hung himself, Silverstone realized that the case was not over. This was the only feature film made by writer and director Pat Verducci and it seemed a mixture of Nancy Drew and JAGGED EDGE. Unfortunately, it was not compelling nor convincing and featured some of the most ill-fitting costumes for nuns not in a comedy. Verducci went on to become a screenwriting teacher at UCLA. The film did get some points for a climax inside a recycling plant featuring a grinder.

David Deal Enjoyed:

RAMROD (47) - Headstrong Veronica Lake defies her cattle baron father (Charles Ruggles in a solid, serious role) and sets out on her own to run a ranch. She hires cowhand Joel McCrea, who has a troubled past, to run the ranch. Ruggles' head man Preston Foster wants to run her off, so a battle of wills commences, with Lake using her feminine wiles to convince McCrea and his buddy Don DeFore to back her up. Lake even goes so far as to run her own herd off a cliff to blame it on Foster. Things do not go well for all involved and justice comes at a high price. An early noir western from Andre de Toth that dwells on the darkness of the main characters' souls, with violence and vengeance being the main focus. This is clearly a western out to subvert the typical western tropes while managing to adhere to some of its basic principles. Recommended.

THE TROJAN HORSE (62)

UNMASKED (50) - Raymond Burr is a blackmailing scandal sheet editor who kills the woman he's in hock to big time in order to get back his IOUs. He frames the woman's husband for the crime, and what follows is an entertaining, twisty noir that barely stops for breath. In those days, Burr excelled at playing evil characters, and we're the better for it.

CORNERED (45)

REPO MAN (84)

FORBIDDEN PLANET (56)

WALK HARD (07)

BLADE RUNNER (82) - The 4K is a thing of beauty.

Mildly enjoyed:

SECRET VENTURE (55) - Kent Taylor makes friends with a professor on his flight to London. Upon arrival their bags get mixed up, and Kent finds himself mixed up in espionage. There are two factions in play: one has the professor and wants his formula and the other has part of the formula and wants the rest of it. This small spy story plays like a mini-serial, with many captures and escapes, guns changing hands, fights, etc. Taylor is a bit too wisecracking for my taste but this is not unentertaining.

THE ACCURSED (57) - AKA The Traitor. A group of the German underground meet each year at a secluded country house on the anniversary of their original leader's execution by the Nazis. When one of the group stumbles in with a knife in his back, and two army officers (one British, one American) arrive complaining of a broken car, things suddenly become complicated and the murders continue. British drawing room mystery that boasts some good atmosphere and a dandy of an ending. Features Christopher Lee and Anton Diffring.

CHOSEN SURVIVORS (74)

NIGHT OF THE SORCERERS (77)

Angel Rivera  Enjoyed:

"ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION" (1939) Chapters 9-12
Where I left off last time, I had watched "Zorro's Fighting Legion" chapters 1 thru 8 and Zorro had escaped every trap and obstacle thrown at him. Serials had a chapter made up of flashbacks and exposition; sort of to aid the audience that may not have seen previous chapters of the serial they were viewing. That was what chapter nine was. Chapters ten thru twelve chronicled how Zorro and his Fighting Legion end the threat of Don Del Oro, who wanted to become Emperor of Mexico and saved the United States of Mexico for duly elected President Benito Juarez and the nation. Zorro of course in this serial was portrayed  by two people. On screen as Zorro's alter ego, Don Diego Vega and Zorro was Reed Hadley. Zorro in all his action scenes was portrayed by  one of Republic Studios best stuntmen, Dale Van Sickel. This serial is where Steven Spielberg and George Lucas got the idea to add whip handling expertise to Indiana Jones. Zorro in this serial uses a whip to disarm his foes, along with his sword. Good viewing for a Zorro fan like me.

Mildly enjoyed:

"THE NET" ((1995)
This can be taken as a cautionary tale given the state of existence we live in now, where a computer "glitch" can cause havoc for the citizenry.
31 year old Sandra Bullock finds she has dormant survival/warrior instincts as she tries to make sense of the predicament she finds herself in. The best thing about this film is a 31 year old Sandra Bullock right after doing "Speed" (1994). Sort of like showing she can save herself.

Bertrand van Wonterghem Highly enjoyed:

Wristcutters: a love story (2006, Goran Ducik)

Enjoyed:

Nous irons tous au paradis (1977, Yves Robert)

Werewolf : the beast among us (2012, Louis Morneau)

Mildly enjoyed:

Killer pad (2007, Robert Englund)

It takes a thief – episode «a thief is a thief » (1967, Leslie Stevens)
Kuronezumi / Black rat (2010, Kenta Fukasaju)

Soda : un trop long week-end (2014, Jean-Michel Bensoussan)

On purge bébé (tv movie) (1961, Marcel Bluwal)

Charles Gilbert watched:

JOHNNY YUMA (1966) Mark Damon plays the two-fisted title character who inherits avuncular wealth, when uncle's young wife Rosalba Neri has her brother gun him down in his own home. She then hires Lawrence Dobkin to kill Yuma.

DJANGO, PREPARE A COFFIN (1968) Terence Hill is Django assembling a reluctant gang of condemned men to carry out revenge against former friend Horst Frank. Odds are fiercely stacked against him facing a phalanx of gunmen at a cemetary in the end, but he has a surprise in the grave he continues to dig.

NOAH'S ARK (1928) B&W. This partly silent film is an eye-filling saga of scenes paralleling events of WWI, which was considered apocalyptic for mankind, hence the title, and biblical scenes like the ark, the tower of Babel, etc. from the bible. Actors Dolores Costello, and George O'Brien, et. al. played dual roles as ancient characters and 1914 contemporary.

Warner Brothers tv westerns:

Sugarfoot pilot episode "Branigan's Boots" Dennis Hopper guest stars as Billy the Kid, who is hired by a crooked politician to gun down newly hired sheriff Tom Brewster.

Lawman pilot episode "The Deputy". Granite-faced Dan Troop (John Russell) ⁰arrives in town to assume duties as sheriff, and immediately advertises for a deputy. Meanwhile he runs into three ornery brothers (Jack Elam, Lee Van Cleef, and Edd Byrnes) who, it turns out, are responsible for the death of the previous sheriff.
