I am interested in knowing what movies you have watched and what you enjoyed or not. So please send me an email at scinema@earthlink.net if you'd like to share. Here's what I watched last week:
Enjoyed:
Da Vinci's Inquest season six (2003)
Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return To Hogwarts (2022) - This is a fun reminder of the film series plus a re-assurance that the cast members had a wonderful time making the movies and still love each other. Naturally this doesn't address Jon Stewart's accusation of anti-semitism. My big disappointment is that there is no mention of Clémence Poésy.
Mildly enjoyed:
ABOUT FACE: SUPERMODELS THEN AND NOW (2012) - Photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders assembled some of the most famous models of the 20th Century, seemingly for a Vanity Fair session ("seemingly" because there is no mention of Vanity Fair in the movie), which he turned into a documentary for HBO. He tossed together a lot of comments about their experiences and their thoughts on the beauty industry but not in a very organized way which makes the program rather frustrating. One does get a sense of what the women are like, but no real idea is given about their careers. Marisa Berenson mentions her movie career, but the film careers of Isabella Rossellini and Carol Alt are not even mentioned. The famous boyfriends of Jerry Hall and Paulina Porizkova are also not mentioned. Still there is pleasure to be had watching the previously mentioned women as well as Carmen Dell'Orefice, Christie Brinkley, Bethann Hardison, China Machado, Pat Cleveland, Beverly Johnson, Lisa Taylor, Christy Turlington, Karen Bjornson, Kim Alexis, Dayle Haddon and Cheryl Tiegs. Also appearing are Jade Hobson, Eileen Ford, Calvin Klein, Harry King, Esme Marshall and Nancy Donahue. One has to wonder about the absence of people like Tisha Campbell and Cindy Crawford. But the film starts with Yacht covering The Velvet Underground song "I'll Be Your Mirror", Eno's "Another Green World" is heard midway through, and over the end credits is heard Lou Reed singing "You Wear It So Well" so it is a pleasant viewing experience.
MOVERS & SHAKERS (1985) - In 1978, Paramount Pictures bought the book THE JOY OF SEX and hired Charles Grodin to write a screenplay using only the title. He finally came up with a script about a writer hired to make a movie using the title of a sex manual and how the studio executives couldn't figure out how to make a movie using that title. Paramount didn't like his script, but Grodin persisted and seven years later, he finally got the film made, with the help of director William Asher. It would be nice to report that all of that effort resulted in a success, but it didn't. The resulting film was only fitfully amusing even with all of the famous friends who agreed to appear: Walter Matthau, Vincent Gardenia, Tyne Daly, Bill Macy, Gilda Radner, Michael Lerner, Nita Talbot, Luana Anders, Gene Dynarski, Steve Martin and Penny Marshall. In the final film, the book's title was changed to LOVE IN SEX.
UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS (2016) - I'm not a fan of the UNDERWORLD series, but I found this, the fifth film, to be a pleasant watch. This was the feature film directorial debut of Anna Foerster and it moved well. It was mostly action and the script didn't require the actors to do much emotively, but you know who were the good guys and who were the bad guys and, naturally, there was the required amount of double crosses and untold secrets.
Did not enjoy:
The Fall (2013-2016) - I caught the first episode of this series and found that Gillian Anderson looked gorgeous. When Laura Donnelly - who I really enjoy on The Nevers - showed up, I thought this looked promising. Needless to say, by the end of the first episode my interest dissipated. Going on-line to see where the series was going, I quickly decided to skip to the last episode to see how it was resolved. I wasn't going to put up with 17 hours of "brilliant serial killer vs. troubled female detective". Not surprising, show creator Allan Cubitt worked on Prime Suspect II.
RIDE CLEAR OF DIABLO (1954) - Abbe Lane gets the Marlene Dietrich treatment here singing two songs, but unfortunately this movie is no DESTRY RIDES AGAIN, but it's better than the Audie Murphy remake DESTRY. Lane plays a saloon singer who occupies the two O'Mara ranch hands with a performance while her boyfriend, Russell Johnson, joins the crooked sheriff, Paul Birch, and the crooked lawyer, William Pullen, in rustling the O'Mara cattle. O'Mara and his teenage son awaken to the sound of their herd moving and race to stop the crime, but are shot dead by Pullen. Railroad surveyor Audie Murphy gets a letter in Colorado from Pullen about the deaths of his kin. Arriving back in his home town, Murphy gets an annoying lecture from Minister Denver Pyle in the cemetery before attempting to see the local sheriff. Rather than the sheriff, he meets the lawman's niece, Susan Cabot, who takes an instant liking to Murphy. Finally meeting Birch and Pullen in the saloon, Murphy asks about the effort to find the killer of his family. Birch agrees to deputize Murphy and tells him to bring in outlaw Dan Duryea, who lives in a town filled with criminals called Diablo. Obviously, the villains expect Duryea to kill Murphy, but our hero proves to be a fast gun and everyone is shocked when Murphy brings Duryea to jail alive. Duryea promises to expose the crooked sheriff if he is found guilty, so Birch convinces Johnson to give false testimony in court. Murphy is surprised by the not guilty verdict, especially since pious Pyle was the jury foreman. Since Johnson swore to tell the truth with his hand on the Bible, Pyle couldn't believe that he would lie. Birch and Pullen next have Johnson steal a white stallion and give it to outlaw Jack Elam and his brothers. Again, Murphy foils expectations by not getting killed, this time with the help of Duryea. Johnson is next given the task of hijacking a silver shipment, but tries to double-cross his bosses by planning to keep the silver for himself and running away with Lane. Duryea finds out about the plan and gets Lane to admit that Pullen killed Murphy's people. Birch told Murphy that Johnson was the killer, and Duryea helps Murphy find Johnson so that he could enjoy the gunfight. Unfortunately for Duryea, Johnson mortally wounds him before Murphy kills Johnson. Birch, Pullen and Elam seek out Murphy, but with Duryea's dying effort, the villains are brought to justice. However, the guy who most needed killing, Pullen, is taken alive - possibly because of Pyle's annoying lecture. And Lane seems to not face punishment for her part, unless you consider losing a boyfriend and a stolen silver shipment punishment. Jesse Hibbs directed the script by George Zuckerman, D.D. Beauchamp and Ellis Marcus and must have gotten along well with Murphy for he directed the movie made from Murphy's book TO HELL AND BACK.
Sons of Liberty (2015) - Watching this six-hour miniseries on January 7, 2022, takes on an unexpected dimension after having spent the previous day watching re-runs of MAGA idiots storming the U.S. Capitol Building in 2021. Obviously the recent fellows imagined themselves as the descendents of those who stormed the home of Massachusetts Governor Thomas Hutchinson in 1765. The historical accuracy of this mini-series has been criticized, and the dramatic validity is shaky. Particularly questionable is the portrayal of Margaret Kimble Gage, the wife of British General Gage, as an abused wife and the informant of the planned military action at Lexington and Concord. Going even further, this drama portrays her as having an adulterous affair with Patriot Joseph Warren and that General Gage personally killed Warren at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Having previously directed episodes of The Borgias, Boardwalk Empire and Vikings, Kari Skogland doesn't seem shy about taking on historical fiction, but I prefer her work on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Occasionally a Paul Blaisdale monster of the female variety emerges from the misty ocean to do Carlo's bidding. Ron Randall in a more animated role as police chief.
MASSACRE TIME aka THE BRUTE AND THE BEAST (1966) Venturing goldminer Tom Corbett (Franco Nero) is summoned home to find his derelict brother George Hilton ever inebriated, and the town consumed by the wealthy Scott family (Guisepoe Addobatti) With John Berther, Sal Borgese, Linda Sini, and Franco .Cobianchi.

Angel Rivera Highly enjoyed:
"The Three Faces of Eve"(1957) which was recommended to me by my lady love.
Joanne Woodward gives a performance worthy of the Oscar she would win for her portrayal of a woman with multiple personality disorder. Her transformation from one personality to the next is better than anything Dr. Jekyll did in turning into Mr. Hyde.
Enjoyed:
Oliver Stone's 2021 documentary about the assassination of JFK titled, "JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass"!
