I am interested in knowing what movies you have watched and what you enjoyed or not. So please send me an email at scinema@earthlink.net if you'd like to share. Here's what I watched last week:

Enjoyed:

BLACK PANTHER WAKANDA FOREVER (2022)

MAX STEINER MAESTRO OF MOVIE MUSIC (2021)

NEVER SLEEP AGAIN: THE ELM STREET LEGACY (2010) - Since I'm not a fan of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series, why did I watch a four hour documentary about it? Because I am very interested in behind-the-scenes stories. I particularly liked that this documentary confirmed my thoughts about how sloppily made the series was, and that stupid coda tacked onto the first film was not Wes Craven's idea. Released in 2010, the documentary only covers the first film in 1984 up until FREDDY VS. JASON in 2003. I can only imagine what all of the interview participants thought about the 2010 remake.

Mildly enjoyed:

CIRCUS OF HORRORS (1960) - Was this the first of the Horror Circus movies? Does FREAKS count? Is this the only movie featuring both Anton Diffring and Walter Gotell in which they do not play Nazis? George Baxt wrote this as a follow-up to HORRORS OF THE BLACK MUSEUM, and it does have an interesting premise. Illegal plastic surgeon Diffring is on the run with his associates, Kenneth Griffith and Jane Hylton, after a botched procedure on John Merivale's fiance Colette Wilde. In France, they meet a little girl with a scar on her face from World War II. Her father, Donald Pleasence, owns a run-down circus and is willing to make Diffring a partner if he can fix his daughter's face. Diffring succeeds, but Pleasence is soon killed while trying to dance with a bear. After seeing the scarred face Erika Remberg rob and murder a bar patron, Diffring offers to fix her face and train her to be a circus performer. Diffring then fills his circus with criminal performers he's made beautiful with plastic surgery. How he's been able in ten years to train these women to become circus headliners as well isn't explained. Unfortunately, every time one of his performers decide to leave the circus, they die in an unexpected "accident". Eventually, Diffring wants to take his circus to England where he plans to reveal his true identity after showing off Yvonne Romain as Helen of Troy. Naturally, British Inspector Conrad Phillips comes to investigate and ends up falling in love with the grown up French girl Yvonne Monlaur. Tired of being Diffring's lackeys, Griffith and Hylton engineer Romain's death and the exposure of Diffring's identity - with the help of Merivale and Wilde whom the police get to attend the circus. Since when is Helen of Troy a lion tamer? The only fun in this movie is seeing actors that have appeared in better movies again.

SPIN A DARK WEB, aka SOHO INCIDENT (1956)

Charles Gilbert watched:

THE RAVEN (1935) B&W. Emeritus Dr. Vollin (Bela Lugosi) is a brilliant surgeon, and a E. A. Poe fanatic. He has recreated the torture devices associated with Poe's compositions in the catacombs of his estate. At the urging of Judge Thatcher (S. S. Hinds) and upon performing a plastic procedure for the face of the judge's daughter disfigured in an auto crash, he suffers unrequited love by her.  His maniacal schemes lead to subjecting her father and friends to his chamber of horrors. Boris Karloff as killer Bayeman steals the show with his botched facial alteration.

THE NIGHT THE WORLD EXPLODED (1957) B&W. Seismologists William Leslie and Kathryn Grant set up lab in the lowest level of Carlsbad Canyon after worldwide earthquakes increase. They discover a new element that exhibits rapid growth and thermal evolution leading to explosion. The name it E 112.

MR. 880 (1950) B&W. Secret Service agent Steve Buchanan (Burt Lancaster) is summoned from Los Angeles to New York for assignment to the  "Mr. 880" file. One dollar "queer" bills have embarrassingly escaped scrutiny for 10 years. The counterfeiting culprit is a kind old man (Edmund Gwenn) that lives in a ramshackle attic next door to a UN language expert (Dorothy McGuire) whom Bucjanan has been dating.

David Deal Enjoyed:

RUNNING TARGET (56)

JIGSAW (61) - The theft of leases from a rental company leads cops Jack Warner and Ronald Lewis to a dismembered body in a remote house in Brighton. Solid Brit police procedural that provides unexpected depth to the line of suspects and witnesses.

BLIND JUSTICE (61)

DR. RENAULT'S SECRET (42)

RONIN (98)

CARIBOO TRAIL (50)

THE GREAT SILENCE (68)

AND GOD SAID TO CAIN (70)

LOST HIGHWAY (97)

EUGENIE (69)

HORROR AT 37,000 FEET (73)

Mildly enjoyed:

TROUBLE FOR TWO (36) - A convoluted plot about a royal marriage between Robert Montgomery and Rosalind Russell centers around The Suicide Club where, in a game of chance, one can be dealt a death card or a kill card. The aim, in this clever mystery based on a Robert Louis Stevenson story, is to break up the club and end happily ever after. Not uninteresting given that the viewer knows no more than the protagonists, this is satisfying but doesn't linger in the imagination.

Did not enjoy:

JIGSAW (68) - Bradford Dillman comes to at a murder scene and can't remember who he is. He hires Harry Guardino, a down-and-out PI to help him put the pieces together again. Somewhat entertaining but mostly annoying tale involving LSD and scientific shenanigans that was shot for television but played theaters. Co-stars Hope Lange, Pat Hingle, Diana Hyland, Victor Jory, Susan Saint James, and Michael Pollard.

Angel Rivera enjoyed:

"Stargirl" episodes 12 & 13-the series finale.

Mildly enjoyed:

"Night of the Bloody Apes"(1969/1974)
