To answer these trivia questions, please email me at scinema@earthlink.net.

Brain Teasers:

Complete the lyric: "She talks about a _____ without a ____."
Complete the lyric: "He doesn't ____; doesn't ____ it."
Complete the lyric: "Maybe his heart is ____. Maybe his life is ___."
Complete the lyric: "Maybe at the end of _____, I'm that ___."

I guess I'm the only person who spent most of his life singing the theme song to UN DOLLARO BUCATO, aka ONE SILVER DOLLAR - "A Man A Story".
"She talks about a night without a moon.
He doesn't care; doesn't read it.
Maybe his heart is dead. Maybe his life is sad.
Maybe at the end of story, I'm that man."

In which Western does Terence Hill pretend to hand over his pistol only to fire it upside down?
It is not MY NAME IS NOBODY or THEY CALL ME TRINITY. Do you know in what film this happened?

In what Western does Thomas Hunter clobber an adversary with a frying pan?
Rick Garibaldi and Angel Rivera knew that it was UN FIUME DI DOLLARI, aka THE HILLS RUN RED.

In what sword and sandal film is Claudio Gora killed with molten gold?
Angel Rivera and George Grimes knew that it was IL FIGLIO DI SPARTACUS, aka THE SLAVE.

And now for some new brain teasers:

Which Italian Western has the last line in the English version: "Hey, Mister. A couple of eggs would go good on the trail."?
Which Italian Western has the last line in the English version: "Exactly!"?
Which Sergio Leone directed Western had an actor commit suicide during production?

I am interested in knowing what movies you have watched and what you enjoyed or not. So please send me an email at scinema@earthlink.net if you'd like to share. Here's what I watched last week:

Enjoyed:

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol. 3 (2023)

Mildly enjoyed:

DARK PHOENIX (2019)

Uncnsrd "Lil Wayne" (2023) - Not being familiar with Lil Wayne's history, I had to go on Wikipedia for more details, because in the interview with Missy Elliot there was no explanation about why he got shot or how he ended up in prison.

Unsung presents Best In Black "Comics" (2023) - This celebrates Flip Wilson, Richard Pryor, Robin Harris, Whoppi Goldberg, Wanda Sykes, Martin Lawrence, Bernie Mac, Redd Foxx, Garrett Morris, Mo'Nique and Dick Gregory.

Did not enjoy:

FALLING IN LOVE AGAIN - "Aided and Abbetted by Susannah York" is the unusual credit given by producer/director/co-writer Steven Paul for this rather standard "middle aged man wondering what happened to his youth" flick. I'm guessing that means that the actress noticed that her part as the wife of Elliot Gould was pretty skimpy and she made enough suggestions on how it could be better that she ended up with a co-writer credit alongside Paul and Ted Allen. An high school reunion in the Bronx inspires a successful couple living in Los Angeles to revisit the memories of their youth, when Gould was Stuart Paul and York was (introducing) Michelle Pfeiffer. As they travel back to the old neighborhood, they remember their old dreams and figure out why they feel like failures. Instead of an affair, Gould has an encounter with a prostitute, reassuring himself that he's not completely impotent. Were there extensive reshoots resulting in three credited directors of photography: Dick Bush, Michael Mieham and Wolfgang Suschitzky? How ambitious was music composer Michel Legrand, who had won Oscars for THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR and SUMMER OF '42, that he co-wrote three songs for this movie: one sung by Steve Lawrence, one sung by Eydie Gorme and one sung by Johnny Mathis? That didn't stop me from hearing Marlene Dietrich singing the English version of "Falling In Love Again" from DER BLAUE ENGEL.

Charles Gilbert Watched:

Wagon Train "The Kitty Albright Story" S05E02 Polly Bergen, as title character joins the wagon train after her stage coach is attacked. Her recent training as a registered nurse benefits fellow travellers contracting contagions, but some think nurse means "loose woman"

Wagon Train S05E06 "The Jenny Douglas Story". Carolyn Jones is a mental patient escaped in the plains with her straight jacket still donned. Despite attention she gets from the doctor (John Lupton) aboard the others want her returned to the hospital

Walker, Texas Ranger S06E20 'Warriors'. Julie Nickson guest stars as a medical speciialist kidnapped for her DNA which can empower developing super soldiers with invulnerability...and  of course  to test Cordele's prowess. Her wunderkind  son, whose blood is even more advanced than mom's, provides the rangers with cryptic info to solve the case.

David Deal Enjoyed:

GOLD OF THE SEVEN SAINTS (61)

SOUTH OF ST. LOUIS (49) - During the Civil War Joel McCrea, Zachary Scott, and Douglas Kennedy are best bud Southern ranchers who lose everything when Victor Jory and his gang - working for the North - blow through and burn everything down. Revenge is in order, but first the trio need to earn money to buy back what they lost, so they get involved in gun running to help the South retake part of Texas. It's complicated, and the three separate for various reasons, including the allure of Dorothy Malone and Alexis Smith. But eventually things are set straight, tho one of the three does not survive. Very good oater that cements McCrea as a primo western hero. Nice Technicolor and excellent performances all around. Chill Wills stands out.

IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA (55)

MONKEY BUSINESS (17) - Interesting and clever documentary on the creators of Curious George.

SANTO IN THE WITCHES ATTACK (64)

THE SCARLET WEB (53) - Griffith Jones walks out of the slammer and is immediately offered a job by a mysterious blonde. Turns out Jones is an insurance investigator who was in stir for his job, and now he's about to be framed for murder. Hazel Court is his exasperated boss. This British mystery is fun, exciting and recommended.

THE POSSESSED (65) AKA The Lady of the Lake

Mildly enjoyed

SONG OF SONGS (33) - Naïve country girl Marlene Dietrich goes to live with her aunt, a bookseller in Berlin, where she falls in love with sculptor Brian Ahearn. Brian reluctantly offers Marlene up to Baron Lionel Atwill so will have a better life. Of course, Marlene's miserable and ends up a dance hall girl before reuniting with her true love. Worth it for Atwill's villainy and the ever beautiful Dietrich.

SOUL OF A MONSTER (44) - Saintly doctor George MacReady lies on his deathbed. His wife begs any power, good or evil, to save him. Enter Rose Hobart, a denizen of Hades, who offers more time for the price of… his soul. George miraculously survives but is an evil shell of himself. Can the local man of God figure a way to win back George's soul? Pompous, religious take on the Faust legend has MacReady and some visual flourishes going for it but don't expect another Tourneur-level mystery.

SHOCK TREATMENT (64) - Actor Stuart Whitman takes a job masquerading as a lunatic to infiltrate a madhouse in order to ferret out the whereabouts of a million dollars hidden by fellow patient Roddy McDowall and desired by psychiatrist Lauren Bacall. Things don't go as planned. Good-looking widescreen black and white shocker is a product of its time exploring hypnosis, shock therapy (hence the title) and mental care in general. Not bad but clearly a fantasy in approach.

Did not enjoy:

SO SAD ABOUT GLORIA (73) - Gloria (Lori Saunders) is sprung from the loony bin (this is a good double bill with Shock Treatment) so she can be driven insane (for one reason or another) by dreams of axe murders. Regional psycho thriller (from Arkansas) features the presence of Dean Jagger and little else to recommend it.

SPECTER OF THE ROSE (46) - A young ballerina falls for the lead dancer in her troupe, whose wife recently died of a mysterious heart attack. They marry, and it turns out he's a lunatic who dances himself out a window rather than kill his lovely young bride. Written and directed by Ben Hecht, this arty melodrama, dripping with irony and its self-defeating prose, becomes what it so heartily despises, a shabby, pretentious valentine to itself.

Angel Rivera Enjoyed:

"Not Dead Yet" Season Finale

"JACK THE GIANT KILLER" (the Musical edit) In the nineties, the producer, Edward Small had been in a legal battle with United Artists over who owned "Jack, the Giant Killer". So he had musical numbers added to the soundtrack and had the film edited so it would look like the characters in the film were singing the newly added songs. I guess this was supposed to make the movie more kid-friendly. It did play on the Disney Premium Cable Channel when it was commercial free back in the nineties. "Jack the Giant Killer" was the first movie I remember seeing in the theatres, so it holds a special place in my memories. The musical version is fairly unchanged from the original version, except for a few scenes were the characters sing to each other. Especially a love song where Kerwin Mathews and Judi Meredith appear to sing to each other with slowed down edits of their movements. Also missing from the musical was the original voice of the imp of the bottle, played by character actor Don Beddoe. Instead a more squeaky high-pitched voice is substituted. All in all not as annoying as it might sound. Kino-Lorber put out a DVD with both versions of the film.
