I am interested in knowing what movies you have watched and what you enjoyed or not. So please send me an email at scinema@earthlink.net if you'd like to share. Here's what I watched last week:

Enjoyed:

Sarah Silverman "A Speck of Dust" (2017)

Mildly enjoyed:

AMERICAN REUNION (2012) - In 1999, AMERICAN PIE was such a success that it looked like everyone involved would go on to be big stars. By 2012, everyone was willing to come back to try and recapture some of that old magic. With new writers/directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. the film only has a suggestion of what made the original film popular, but it is an easy watch and there is some attractive female flesh on view.

FEAST OF THE SEVEN FISHES (2018) - Robert Tinnell began his movie career as a producer of 1987's SURF NAZIS MUST DIE. He began directing in 1995 with KIDS OF THE ROUND TABLE. Meanwhile he had a separate career as the creator of graphic novels, mostly dealing with Horror including THE BLACK FOREST and THE LIVING AND THE DEAD. In 2005, Robert Tinnell was nominated for an Eisner Award for his graphic novel FEAST OF THE SEVEN FISHES which told what seemed like an autobiographical tale of an aspiring artist from a working class Italian family who meets a WASPish rich girl at home during a Christmas break from an Ivy League college. In the movie, Skyler Gisondo is trying to help his ex-girlfriend Addison Timlin accept that they don't belong together. Meanwhile, Madison Iseman is fuming that boyfriend Allen Williamson decided to spend the break skiing with his friends rather than visiting with her during the holidays. College friend Jessica Darrow convinces Iseman to go out with her rather than stay at home with her controlling mother Lisa Velten Smith. Darrow thinks that Iseman would hit it off with Gisondo, and she's right. Later, Gisondo's uncle Joe Pantoliano invites Iseman to join the family for the "Feast of the Seven Fishes" on Chrismas Eve. If you're a fan of Italian Americans cooking fish, this is the movie for you. If you like a sensitive coming of age story with profane language and a fist fight or two, then this is a movie for you. Was it deliberate for Tinnell to cast the two young women in Gisondo's life with actresses who look alike?

I AM PAUL WALKER (2018) - Filled with home movies and remembrances from his family, this documentary by Adrian Buitenhuis is a convincing labor of love for the deceased actor. I don't know much about Walker's life so if there was an agenda behind this portrait, I didn't notice it - though it seems odd that neither his daughter nor his baby's mother appear.

David Deal Enjoyed:

THE DRAGOON WELLS MASSACRE (57) - Oily businessman Sebastian Cabot comes upon a group of soldiers slaughtered by the Apache, with only officer Dennis O'Keefe surviving. Soon a prison wagon with a couple of outlaws (Barry Sullivan and Jack Elam) comes by followed shortly by a stagecoach with several passengers. How many will survive the dangerous desert trek to the nearest fort? A character-driven road trip western with a solid cast and beautiful country for them to wander thru. Director Harold D Schuster specialized in television.

THE MONOLITH MONSTERS (57)

THE QUIET GUN (57) - Sheriff Forrest Tucker faces a town up in arms about his friend Jim Davis who has taken in an Indian girl (Mara Corday) although not divorced from his absent wife. Soon it is revealed that the girl was a setup in order for the local villain saloon owner and his muscle Lee Van Cleef to take Davis's ranch and use it for rustling cattle. An interesting and involving oater with a bone to pick with moralists and do-gooders who point at others without a care in the world about their own failings. Tucker is great as the beleaguered lawman sitting on a powder keg. Thumbs up.

I AM WAITING (57) - Ex-boxer turned restaurant owner Yujiro Ishihara steps in to prevent despondent cabaret singer Mie Kitahara from committing suicide. He has a dream of leaving to join his brother in Brazil while she dreams of escaping the clutches of the mobsters she works for now. The pair's stories intersect in ways they couldn't have imagined in this brooding noir, an early hit for Japan's Nikkatsu studio.

THE BLACK ABBOT (63)

THE BADLANDERS (58) - Alan Ladd and Ernest Borgnine are released from Yuma prison and make their way to "Prescott" Arizona. Ladd was framed for robbery and cheated out of his share of a gold mine, and now he wants revenge. He and Borgnine plan to rob the mine of rich ore and start new lives. Delmer Daves' heist western is a riff on The Asphalt Jungle and entertains on multiple levels. Borgnine has a refreshingly sweet relationship with Katy Jurado, and the two were married a year later. The solid cast includes Kent Smith, Nehemiah Persoff, and Anthony Caruso, who was also in The Asphalt Jungle. (The reason Prescott is in quotes is because this film was shot in Old Tucson and looks nothing like the real northern Arizona town.)

IT AIN'T OVER (22) - Excellent documentary on Yogi Berra.

THE RAVEN (63)

SAMPO (59) - The Deaf Crocodile Blu-ray is marvelous compared to my old Day the Earth Froze version.

PASSENGERS (16) - The Avalon is a starship carrying 5000 colonists and 250 crew to the planet Homestead II. Since the journey will take 120 years, all the humans aboard are in hibernation. When a technical glitch causes Chris Pratt to awaken early, he finds himself alone with 90 years to go. After a year he resolves to awaken Jennifer Lawrence but doesn't tell her the truth about how she awoke. When the ship's systems begin malfunctioning, it would seem the ship and all its passengers are doomed. I liked this sci-fi tale with its Oscar-nominated production design, its appealing leads, and its meditation on solitude and togetherness.

THE KILLERS (46)

Mildly enjoyed:

DEEP IMPACT (98) - A comet the size of New York City is headed for Earth. A team of astronauts is sent to drill nukes into the comet and explode it into bits. Unfortunately, all the explosions did was break the comet into two pieces still aiming at Earth. Typical disaster movie with good special effects and a large cast of characters who must come to terms with the Extinction Level Event. Good for popcorn and spotting actors who would continue work, mostly in television, where director Mimi Leder would spend her time.

CALLAN (74) - Edward Woodward reprises his role of Callan from his hit TV series (1966-71), a government hitman who hates his job but can't escape the inevitable pull of his superiors to continue his expert work. Callan is told to eliminate German businessman Carl Mohner but not told why in this deeply cynical spy story. Interesting but rather dreary and meandering. Not a classic but of interest to aficionados.

CONQUEROR OF ATLANTIS (65)

Bertrand van Wonterghem Enjoyed:

Sympathy for the devil (2023, Yuval Adler)

Dark waters (1944, André de Toth)

Slow horses – season 1 – episodes 4 to 6 – season 2 (6 epis) – season 3 (6 epis)

Mildly enjoyed:

Invasion of the star creatures (1962, Bruno Ve Sota)

Monarch: legacy of monsters – season 1 – episodes 9 &10

Gyeongseongkeulicheo / Gyeongseong creature – season 1 – episode 2

DC’s legends of tomorrow – episodes ”Bay of squids” (2020, Sudz Sutherland),
”The satanist's apprentice” (2020, Caity Lotz)
    & ”Bishop's gambit” (2020, Kevin Mock)

Angel Rivera Enjoyed:

"THE SON OF HERCULES IN THE LAND OF FIRE" (1963) aka "URSUS IN THE LAND OF FIRE"
While not as interesting as Ed Fury's first outing as Ursus (in "Mighty Ursus" (1961/2) still has a lot of action and is worth a look. In this film, Ursus saves a princess and disposes of the usurper to the throne.

"POWER OF FILM" (2024)
An interesting six part documentary series from TCM (only the first three episodes have been shown to date) about why some movies have such cultural and emotional impact on their audiences.

Charles Gilbert watched:

SECRET COMMAND (1944) B&W. WW2 action occurs at a shipyard preparing to work on a carrier. Undercover agent Sam (Pat O'Brien) hunts for saboteurs as he poses being married to Carole Landis with two kids.

BERLIN CORRESPONDENT (1942) B&W. Yankee journalist Bill Roberts (Dana Andrews in titular role) is permitted under the Third Reich to transmit regular broadcasts from Berlin to America until his news contravenes the Nazi agenda. His chief adversary now is Captain von Rau (Martin Kosleck in virtually the same role as in UNDERGROUND 1941. His secretary Argentinian actress Mona Maris is also in essentially the same role as before.)
