THE UGLY DUCKLING (1959) - Some of my favorite movie comedies are British, but none of them were made by Hammer Films. If this wasn't made by Hammer, I wouldn't give this movie a second thought. But I enjoyed seeing familiar faces even in something rather tiresome and unfunny. Anyone expecting this to have anything to do with the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, will be disappointed, but the credits acknowledge that the script has "ideas stolen from Robert Louis Stevenson". Before a group of youths - who seem to have been modeled after the youths in WEST SIDE STORY, Maudie Edwards, as Henrietta Jekyll, leads a group of ballroom dancers in an exhibition of old time ballroom dancing. As one of her regulars has a sprained ankle, her brother, Bernard Bresslaw, as Henry Jekyll, steps in as a substitute. Not surprisingly, he screws everything up and the exhibition is a disaster. Edwards is devastated, because she is hoping to impress her beau Reginald Beckwith. With her other brother, Jon Pertwee, as Victor Jekyll, she discusses whether something should be done about Bresslaw, and they both fear that the scandal associated with their infamous grandfather might resurface with Bresslaw acting strangely. The Jekylls live in a chemist's shop, and, of course, Bresslaw finds his grandfather's old formula. Here, the formula unleashes the confident and competent person hiding inside Bresslaw's shy and awkward persona. An highlight of the movie is that when Bresslaw drinks the formula, we hear James Bernard's theme music to DRACULA, aka HORROR OF DRACULA - which is not mentioned in the credits. Why this new persona is also a skilled criminal is not explained. He soon joins the gang, led by Elwyn Brook-Jones, using the dance hall as a front. Under the influence of the formula, Bresslaw steals into a building under police guards, cracks open a safe and makes off with some priceless jewels. However, the formula wears off before he can hand the jewels over to Brook-Jones, so Bresslaw no longer looks like Teddy Hyde and he can't remember what he did. When Jean Muir, who wants to be Bresslaw's girlfriend - and is modeled after Anybodys in WEST SIDE STORY, and Pertwee discover the stolen jewels on Bresslaw, they figure out that from where they were stolen. The trick is to put the jewels back before the theft is discovered, with Bresslaw having no memory of how he stole them in the first place. Muir is caught by Brook-Jones and his gang and accidentally tells them that Bresslaw is going to return the jewels. So everyone gathers at the fashion show where the jewels are to be displayed. Naturally there is a slapstick chase sequence, but all works out well in the end. Bresslaw was a veteran Hammer actor in films like THE MEN OF SHERWOOD FOREST, THE GLASS CAGE and I ONLY ARSKED. Pertwee never did another Hammer film, but did a stint as Doctor Who before appearing in the Amicus Production of THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD. Beckwith appeared in the Hammer films WHISPERING SMITH HITS LONDON, THE MEN OF SHERWOOD FOREST, THE LYONS IN PARIS, BREAK IN THE CIRCLE and UP THE CREEK. Richard Wattis was in the Hammer Films STOLEN FACE, BLOOD ORANGE, THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN and TEN SECONDS TO HELL. Michael Ripper was in THE ADVENTURES OF PC 49, BLOOD ORANGE, X THE UNKNOWN, THE STEEL BAYONET, QUATERMASS 2, THE CAMP ON BLOOD ISLAND, UP THE CREEK, THE REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN, FUTHER UP THE CREEK, I ONLY ARSKED, THE MAN WHO COULD CHEAT DEATH and THE MUMMY before DUCKLING, and many others after. Harold Goodwin appeared in THE LAST PAGE and THE MUMMY before DUCKLING and in many more after. David Lodge was in UP THE CREEK, FURTHER UP THE CREEK, I ONLY ARSKED and YESTERDAY'S ENEMY, but I'll always remember him for his part in The Running Jumping & Standing Still Film. Michael Ward was in WHAT THE BUTLER SAW and WHISPERING SMITH HITS LONDON. John Harvey was in DICK BARTON STRIKES BACK, THE BLACK WIDOW and X THE UNKNOWN with more Hammer appearances after DUCKLING. However, my favorite thing about this movie is Jean Muir, who had a very short career and never made another Hammer Film. The film reminds me of the music video for The Kinks' "Come Dancing" with all of the talk about "going to the pally". Popular big band group Joe Loss & His Orchestra get big billing in the movie and a lot of screen time. They are shown as "cool", as opposed to the band playing for the ballroom dancers. I kept wondering how this would all play out after rock 'n' roll happened.

Did not enjoy:

AMMAZZALI TUTTI E TORNO SOLO, aka KILL THEM ALL AND COME BACK ALONE (1968) - I saw this movie when it came out in theaters and I didn't like it. I like it even less now on a re-watch. Some Italian filmmakers seem to think that twisty plots are enjoyable. This movie has about four double crosses too many for me. It is a shame that Enzo Castellari's first credited Western was given the English title of ANY GUN CAN PLAY, because the original title VADO... L'AMMAZZO E TORNO, aka GO KILL THEM AND COME BACK, fit nicely into a pattern of his Westerns... with VADO, VEDO E SPARO, aka I CAME, I SAW, I SHOT and then KILL THEM ALL AND COME BACK ALONE. I mostly cringe when Italian Westerns try to create an historic background to their stories. Sergio Leone mostly got away with it in THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY. But this movie layers on the ridiculousness by having this plot taking place during the American Civil War. Aside from another tuneful music score by Francesco De Masi, the only enjoyment to be found in this movie is as a showreel for Italian stuntmen. Giovanni Cianfriglia and Alberto Dell'Acqua are stuntmen as well as actors, so they get to perform some amazing bits for the camera. Stunt coordinator Giorgio Ubaldi gets the rest of his team to do just about everything from acrobatic deaths to high falls. No one gets set on fire, though. And if Antonio Molino Rojo is in this movie, they did an excellent job of hiding his face.

FINAL STOP (2021) - Vince Rodriguez is an "Uride" driver who is frustrated that he can not convince his mother, Sheila Edmiston, to get her abusive husband, Garrett Marchbank, out of their lives. One night he gives a ride to Kelly McCart and her jealous boyfriend Kamy D. Bruder. Convinced that Bruder is abusive, like his father, Rodriguez begins a campaign to win McCart away. After about an hour of screen time, Rodriguez kidnaps McCart in order to "save" her. When she threatens to call the police, he explodes and clobbers her in the head with a tire iron. Marchbank comes upon the scene, and advises his son that if Rodriguez doesn't kill the girl, his life is ruined. It seems that Bruder might arrive in time to save McCart, but he fails. Rodriguez plants McCart's dead body in Bruder's car, successfully framing the boyfriend for the murder. The film ends with Rodriguez settling down with McCart's best friend, Caroline Stella, facing a seemingly worry free future. Low budget director Jeffrey J. Moore is credited with coming up with this film's story, with Sharif Shakhshir penning the screenplay. With no characters with which a viewer to engage, and failing to create a pace that is compelling, Moore delivers an overlong exercise in tension that results in a deary experience.

THE SNOW QUEEN: MIRRORLANDS (2018) - While watching this computer animation feature from Russia, I was often feeling that I was missing something. Now I've found that this is the fourth film in a "Snow Queen franchise" which began in 2012. Gerta is the heroine in all four films and I guess she was responsible for exiling the Snow Queen into the Mirrorlands back in the first film. In this fourth film, Gerta's family of magicians are threatened by King Harald, who worships technology and plans to cast all magicians into the Mirrorlands to prevent someone like the Snow Queen from causing another catastrophe. Gerta fails to prevent her parents and brother from being cast away, but not being magical, Gerta doesn't pass through the portal. In the Mirrorlands, the Snow Queen "dream walks" to advise Gerta in how to open the portal. To achieve this, Gerta must seek help from airborne pirates, trolls and the wielder of fire. In the end, it turns out that the King's son is magical and he casts himself into the Mirrorlands. So the King finally agrees to help our heroine open the portal and free the magicians. For this film, the Russians hired an American animator, Robert Lence, as a co-director, but despite the impressive visual design and enjoyable animation, I found  the film uninvoling and tiresome. Ultimately, I am not the intended audience for this film and reportedly it did well in over 150 countries.

TWO BY TWO: OVERBOARD, aka OOOPS! THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES (2020) - Again I watched an animated movie only to find out that it is the sequel to a movie of which I had never been informed. 2015's OOOPS! NOAH IS GONE..., aka ALL CREATURES BIG AND SMALL, aka TWO BY TWO, was based on an idea by Ralph Christians about what happened to the creatures that missed Noah's Ark. In the sequel, the mythological heroes of the previous film - a Nestrian and a Grymp, keep getting into trouble on an Ark that doesn't have any humans aboard. The idea of a story about Noah's Ark not mentioning God or Humans seems odd. A lion captains the ship, where all of the animals have learned to get along and not eat each other. Unfortunately, our heroes' parents have discovered that the food supply on the Ark has been exhausted, and the dove sent out has yet to find land. The kids fall overboard one night, but it turns out that a Nestrian can live underwater and is rescued by other Nestrians who survived the flood by building a civilization underwater. The Grymp child befriends a jelly fish and lands on an island. Soon, they learn that the Nestrian city is built under the island, on to which the Ark also lands. The Nestrians don't trust surface dwellers because of a long history of being dinner for carnivores. Eventually, the kids warn everyone that the island has an erupting volcano and everyone has to escape on the Ark. Thankfully, the new Nestrian passengers introduce everyone to the joys of sea food, and when the dove returns with sign of land, they decide they don't want to leave their ship - which now resembles a cruise liner. A co-production from Germany, Luxembourg and Ireland, this film is quite colorful, but not very much fun. But, again, I don't think I was the intended audience for it.

ALL CREATURES BIG AND SMALL, aka OOOPS! NOAH IS GONE... (2015) - Now that I've seen the first film, the second film makes a lot more sense. It explains what are Nestrians and what are Grymps and how the two single parents got aboard the Ark. It also sets up the revelation in the sequel that Nestrians can thrive in the water. It also explains that Noah put the Lion in charge of the ship, though it still doesn't explain where the humans went - or whether they actually exist in this version of the world. And there is still no mention of God. I found the first film more fun than the sequel, especially the way that Finny kept wanting to give Leah an hug.

WINGS, aka OT VINTA 3D (2012) - Last week I noted that I didn't enjoy WINGS: SKY FORCE HEROES and wondered if it was actually originally intended as a sequel to WINGS. It turns out that it was a sequel only to the makers of the English language version Melanie and Mychal Simka. The Simkas had already taken a Russian animated film, retitled it WINGS, and got Josh Duhamel, Hilary Duff and Rob Schneider to voice it. When a Chinese animated film called SKY FORCE showed up - also featuring talking airplanes, the Simkas decided to turn it into a sequel - completely ignoring that the plane designs and plots were very different; in WINGS the hero is a jet, while in SKY FORCE he's a propeller plane. But the Simkas got Duhamel and Duff to return as talking planes while Schneider went from being a talking bird to a talking robot. I found the story about the Simkas reworking these foreign animated films to be more interesting than the resulting films, which are cliche-ridden and tiresome. I also wonder if the Russian film originally crashed the villain plane, but that the Simkas cut that out as too violent for English language kids.

A TALE OF TWO GUNS (2022) - Writer/director Justin Lee seems to have found a market for tiny budgeted Westerns, as this seems to be his fifth. Since 2018, he's ground out 18 features, none of which I've heard. Do these sell overseas, or stock Red Boxes? On my new cable service, there's an HDNET Movies channel which is where I discovered this. Again, this would seem to be a project that the making of is more interesting than the final show. Marshall Tom Berenger is out to get the last of the outlaw band known as "The Cowboys" - with the red shashes right out of TOMBSTONE. He gets the drop on some - played by people who were involved in the making of STARSHIP TROOPERS: Casper Van Dien, Jake Busey and screenwriter Ed Neumeier. Van Dien gets away and Berenger is wounded. Unable to go after Van Dien, Bergenger hires Ed Morrone to get the last of "The Cowboys" - who has headed off into Apache Territory to buy land for sale from the U.S. Government. Writer Lee spaces out his action with long winded dialogue scenes which help get the movie to feature length, but makes it a drag to sit through. A number of familiar actors - Judd Nelson, Jeff Fahey and Danny Trejo, who previously appeared in other Justin Lee movies, do cameos here, giving the impression that working with Lee must be a pleasant experience. As this production was captured on digital equipment, without any film passing through a camera, Lee's credit of "A Film By" seems very wrong. I do appreciate that Lee tends to put his camera on a tripod, which is a big plus for a low budget production. Robert Revell delivers a music score which seems to be his idea of what an Italian Western score should be - but it isn't.

90 FEET FROM HOME (2019) - Who felt that this dreary story needed over two hours to be told? Abusive drunk step dad Shawn Michaels is such a jerk that when it seems that Chase Pollock has a chance at a professional baseball career, he breaks the boy's arm with a baseball bat. Not surprisingly, Pollock leaves  home with his mother and younger brother still at the mercy of Michaels. 15 years later, Pollock has become Adam Hampton and he returns to his home town. He's surprised to find out that Michaels is now out of prison for killing a mother and her children in a drunken auto crash. Hampton's mother is dead from cancer and his brother, Thom Hallum, is now a detective with a wife and daughter. At first Hampton is determined to get Michaels out of the family home. But Hallum is worried that Hampton wants to kill Michaels. In following his father, Hampton finds out that two thugs have been hired to kill Michaels. Hampton kills the two thugs, and gets Hallum to help dump the bodies in the river. Not surprising, when the bodies are found, Hallum finds himself being investigated by Internal Affairs. It would have made more sense if someone had just killed Hallum for being so stupid. Anyway, will Hampton finally kill Michaels, or will being told that his father will soon die from cancer cause him to have a change of heart? Are we to believe that Hampton's written confession will solve Hallum's problems with Internal Affairs? Will Hallum's wife forgive him for his lies? And will the husband of the woman Michaels killed in the crash, played by Dean Cain, finally give up hiring people to kill Michaels? Eric Roberts has a small role near the beginning of the movie as an high school counselor trying to help Pollock. Writer/director Brett Bentman made seven features before this one - none of which I had heard. He also produced this through his company B22 Films. 

TONI ERDMANN (2016) - This German-Austrian film, written and directed by Maren Ade, was impressive enough to win five European Films Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriter, Best Actor and Best Actress. It also won the European Parliment LUX Prize and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards. But why was it felt that it had to run 162 minutes. For a film about intimate emotions that reveals small truths, couldn't the telling have been set at a more watchable pace? Peter Simonischek is an eccentric retired man, who amuses himself by telling a mail delivery man that he's just gotten out of prison for mailing postal bombs. Finding out that his daughter, Sandra Huller, is making a rare visit to town, he leaves his ailing dog with his mother, Ingrid Burkhard, to see if he can see her. Huller is a driven business woman so even though she if happy to see her father, she doesn't have the time to spend with him between business phone calls. After his dog dies, Simonischek travels to Bucharest, Romania to shadow his daughter during her daily life. After missing an important meeting, Huller asks her father to go home. Later, she finds that he's not gone home, but wearing a wig and false teeth, he's turning up where-ever she is. Introducing himself as "Toni Erdmann" from the German Embassy, Simonischek becomes part of his daughter's social circle. Perhaps inspired by her father's sense of fun, Huller tires of the stress of having to turn her birthday party into a "team building" exercise, and decides to answer the door naked. Everyone from the office who attends has to be nude, so confusion reigns when a man wearing a full-body Bulgarian kukeri (bear-like) costume arrives. Huller realizes that it is her father, and when he leaves, she gives him an heart felt hug. The film ends at the funeral reception for Burkhard months later. Huller quit her job in Romania, and is to take a new job in Singapore. To answer his daughter's question about finding a reason to live, Simonischek responds with something like "Life is so often about getting things done. You have to do this or that, but in the meanwhile, life is just passing by. How are we supposed to hang on to moments?" Huller borrows her father's false teeth and an hat from her grandmother's storage. The father rushes off to get his camera, but leaves Huller alone and she takes out the teeth and takes off the hat. This is certainly the only Oscar nominated movie in which a woman refuses to have sex with a man, but encourages him to masturbate onto a petit four, which she then eats. Some how, I think only a female writer/director could have come up with such a scene. Romanian actress Ingrid Bisu is quite fetching as Huller's assistant, and we're sure to see more of her as she married the man who directed her in THE NUN, James Wan. She and Wan co-wrote MALIGNANT.

What To Do When Someone Dies, aka Without You (2011) - I became a fan of Anna Friel because of Pushing Daisies (2007). If it wasn't for that fact, I wouldn't have put up with this three part TV adaptation of the novel by Sean French and Nicci Gerrard - an husband and wife team that write as Nicci French. Friel's husband has been killed in a firey car crash. In the car was also a woman. Everyone assumes that the husband must have been having an affair, but she doesn't believe it. For over two incredibly frustrating hours, everyone tells Friel that she should just get over it. Finally, she uncovers the truth - that it was murder and that her husband was innocent. Screenwriter Charlotte Jones and director Tim Fywell fail to tell the story in an interesting way.

SON OF HERCULES IN THE LAND OF FIRE (1963) My favorite of the Ursus films  has the best musical score by Carlo Savina. My daughter remarked that Claudia Mori was the prettiest.

URSUS IN THE LAND OF FIRE (1963) It puzzles me that a few lines in dialogue were altered for the "Sons" version that were unnecessary. For example Sarick tells Ursus, "Why I'm not dead after watching that is a miracle." To which Ursus responds in this version, "Why I'm not dead is a miracle.", but in "Sons" it is "The strength of the gods was in me.

CRASHOUT (1955) B&W. Six convicts escape prison, and set out for a hidden stache of $185 K.  All but one gets knocked off one by one in the following order: Luther Adler, Marshall Thompson, William Tallman, Gene Evans, and William Bendix. Arthur Kennedy remains.

Wild  Wild West  "Night of the Watery Death" (S2E09) Jocelyn Lane (VENUS MEETS THE SON OF HERCULES) guest stars with John Van Dreelen.

The Third Man (S1E17) 'The Angry Young Man' B&W television series with Michael Rennie.  Roger Moore and Hazel Court guest as step son and step mom lovers scheming against his wealthy father.

Frontline Documentary "Cell Tower Deaths' Untrained climbers fall to their death performing maintenance for the booming cell industry. OSHA turns a blind eye.

The Detectives (S1E13) "Karate' Detective Matt Holbrook (Robert Taylor) visits the local dojo while investigating a death from blunt force trauna. He finds out his high school classmate (John Anderson) is a student there  Turns out he is the culprit, and has had a lifelong grudge of jealousy towards Matt.

David Deal Enjoyed:

KIMI (22) - An agoraphobic content moderator for a virtual assistant company (Zoe Kravitz) hears a potential sexual assault and murder recorded by the device and must venture outside in her attempt to report it. Steven Soderbergh's thriller is stripped down and high tech, and it's fun despite the occasional leap of logic.

PHILO VANCE'S SECRET MISSION (47) - A magazine publisher calls in Philo Vance (Alan Curtis) because he thinks he's solved the 7-year-old murder of his business partner. When the publisher is killed before he can clue Vance, everyone in the office becomes a suspect. Breezy series entry will entertain with its twists and turns, and supporter Frank Jenks scores again as the sidekick.

SHOOT JOE, AND SHOOT AGAIN (72) - Peaceable Richard Harrison finds himself in the middle of a feud between bank robbers over the loot. He takes the money and goes on the run with the gang close behind. Emilio Miraglia's spaghetti doesn't have much of a cast but it does have some style.

MAD GOD (22) - Phil Tippett's animated grotesque is an amazing piece of art and quite beautiful in its own horrific way. Recommended for those who embrace Lynchian travails or the netherworlds of the Bros Quay.

THE GOLDEN BAT (66)

PENDULUM (67) - George Peppard is a high-profile cop who has his important case thrown out because of his error. On top of that, his wife is having an affair. So George plans to catch her and her lover. When both turn up dead, he becomes the prime suspect. Back lot cop drama with enough going for it to merit a watch.

PLANET OF THE WOMEN INVADERS (65) - Mexican sci-fi is a compilation of pulp plots we've seen before. A group of folks who think they're going on a carnival ride are kidnapped to another planet peopled with beautiful women. The idea is that the evil queen (Lorena Vasquez, who also plays her nicer twin) has ordered the lungs of these humans be removed and implanted in her troops - who can't stand the Earth air for long - so they can take over the Earth. Silly and slow, this weak effort does have two Lorena's for the price of one and some interesting sets.

"Dinosaurus"(1960)

A film produced by Jack H. Harris and directed by Irvin Yeaworth, who were also behind the original "The Blob" (1958) and "4D Man" (1959). Stop motion animation done by the guys who will become Project Unlimited and do the special effects for the TV show "Outer Limits" (1963-65). Cute story. Pre -Jurassic Park about two dinosaurs which are revived and cause havoc on a small West Indian island. Along with a revived Neanderthal caveman.and an island boy. Cute fare for children of all ages.

"Defenders of the Earth"(1986)

Pilot for TV animated series featuring characters, Flash Gordon, the Phantom and Mandrake the Magician and his assistant, Lothar; as well as some of their offspring in their battle against Ming the Merciless.

"Earth vs. the Flying Saucers" (1956)

Ray Harryhausen does his magic and aliens in flying saucers attack the Earth and are repelled by invention of scientist Hugh Marlowe. Includes scene of flying saucer crashing into capital building.

"Cyborg 2087"(1966)

Micheal Rennie is a cybernetic organism sent from the future year 2087 back to 1966 to prevent a 20th century scientist from creating an invention which will destroy the future. Plot similar to ones used on episodes of the Outer Limits TV series and the Terminator movies. Film is one of several films produced by  United Pictures Corporation. One of the other pictures they produced was a film titled, "Dimension 5" (1966), the film Jeffrey Hunter chose to do instead of captain the USS Enterprise beyond the pilot episode. The Michael Rennie film is mildly interesting as low budget fare.

Galaxina" (1980)

Film debut of tragic actress and Playboy model, Dorothy R. Stratten as a robot who is part of a crew of future police officers. Mildly entertaining because she is the best thing to watch for in this movie.

"The Gabby Petito Story" (2022)
